Libraries often find their Acquisitions process the most challenging. Many libraries now perform some of the functions of their traditional acquisitions systems in their online ordering programs. Between online ordering and copy cataloging, many libraries see an acquisitions module as more work and potential duplication than the results justify.

If your library has abandoned an automated solution or has just stuck with spreadsheets, you are not alone; few libraries have adapted their workflows to take full advantage of online ordering. You owe it to yourself to see how some of today’s acquisitions modules – like TLC’s OSA – can take full advantage of online ordering to import online order records automatically and avoid duplication of effort.

In this webinar, we will look at a workflow available in TLC’s Acquisitions module, OSA to:

1. Automatically harvest and import a library’s online orders from leading vendors.

2. Populate fund account and collection code information from the online order data.

3. Automatically find, and overlay, the bib data in the order record with a full MARC record from a hierarchy of your preferred MARC sources.

Although this approach to life works well for those of us with desks that resemble a disaster area, this cannot be said for a library’s data.  As libraries have been forced to make a rapid pivot to distance programming and digital resources in the time of COVID-19, those institutions cannot rely on borrowers making “pleasant surprises” in the PAC.  Libraries need to provide discovery layers to their borrowers with the best data possible.

Years ago, TLC invented two data services that assisted libraries, regardless of ILS vendor, that were geared toward assisting customers to adjust to the development of RDA as a standard and the explosion of eBooks. Now, as libraries focus on the importance of discovery layers, RDAExpress and eBiblioFile have become important tools to libraries yet again.
