TLC Salutes Los Angeles Public Library

Los Angeles is a city where people from all over the world come to realize their dreams. Whether they’re just starting out or completely starting over, more than any other place in the city, people start at the Los Angeles Public Library.

It’s a vibrant, dynamic system that serves the largest population of any library in the United States with 73 locations that are visited by more than 14 million people and offer 18,000 public programs per year.

LAPL’s collection includes more than 6 million print and electronic items. Its Web site receives more than 22 million visits per year. Its landmark Central Library also offers 3 million historic photographs and a variety of special collections including historic menus, vintage sheet music and travel posters.

Its technology, like its collections, is equally impressive. Systemwide, LAPL offers 2,600 public computers, robust e-media collections, Wi-Fi, digital petting zoos, more than 900 online courses and tech workshops for youth on robotics, coding and stop-motion animation. LAPL’s programs including those addressing citizenship and immigrant integration, healthcare disparities, financial literacy and veterans services as well as its online high school diploma program for adults, are models for other libraries across the country.

Since 1993, Los Angeles Public Library has utilized The Library Corporation’s CARL system for its circulation and automation software. Over the years, CARL has served the evolving needs of tech-savvy library users who are just as likely to download an e-book or stream a movie as they are to check out the latest hard-cover best-seller.

TLC salutes Los Angeles Public Library and is proud to support its service mission with the CARLX automation system.
